Texas prosecutor doesn’t have to release shooting video

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The state attorney general has ruled that a South Texas prosecutor does not have to release video of police fatally shooting a student in a middle school hallway in January.

Texas State Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office ruled earlier this month that all records and documents pertaining to juveniles are confidential, even in cases in which the juvenile died.

Brownsville police officers shot Jaime Gonzalez Jr., a 15-year-old eighth-grader at Cummings Middle School, after he pointed what turned out to be a pellet gun at them and refused to put it down.

The Brownsville Herald reported today that John Bussian, an attorney representing the newspaper, said Abbott’s office strayed from the Cameron County district attorney’s argument that the video should remain private because no charges were filed in the case.
