Student speech in 2012: continuing legal education

This one-hour CLE course at the First Amendment Center on Dec. 11, 2012, will provide a review of important student-speech (K-12) rulings over the past year. Topics include true threats, student speech on social-networking sites, the Confederate flag and other hot-button issues in public school free-speech law.

  • Religious expression at graduation
  • Bracelets and other forms of expressive conduct
  • Gang symbols

David L. Hudson Jr. is a First Amendment Scholar at the First Amendment. He teaches classes on the First Amendment at Vanderbilt Law School and the Nashville School of law. An expert on student speech, he is the author of the book Let The Students Speak!: A History of the Fight For Free Expression in American Schools (Beacon Press, 2011).


Fee: $50 for attorneys and special rate for law students and elementary, middle-school or high school teachers. Register on or before Dec. 10 to guarantee receiving downloadable materials before the program.

Cancellation deadline: Dec. 10. No refunds or credits will be issued for cancellations or “no shows” received after Dec. 10; however, a substitute may attend for a registered participant.
