Seigenthalers agree media need accountability

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

The Murfreesboro Daily News Journal reported that the father-son pair of John Seigenthaler and John Michael Seigenthaler agreed in a talk yesterday that online and social media often fail to report honestly and responsibly. They also had critical words for cable news.

John Seigenthaler, founder of the First Amendment Center, called for a “commitment to fact-based journalism” along with continued defense of the news media’s First Amendment freedom to report. Former NBC News anchor and reporter John Michael Seigenthaler decried the proliferation of “hate speech” online, but also noted the positive effects of social and online media in reporting breaking news quickly. He is now  CEO of Seigenthaler Public Relations in New York.

See video of yesterday’s presentation at Middle Tennessee State University on “Living the First Amendment.” About 350 MTSU students and faculty attended the program.
