Romney-era e-mails wiped from Mass. records
BOSTON — Massachusetts state officials say that just before the end of Mitt Romney’s term as governor, 11 of his top aides purchased their state-owned computer hard drives, and the Romney administration’s e-mails were all wiped from a server.
The chief legal counsel for Gov. Deval Patrick told The Boston Globe that Romney administration officials had the remaining computers in the governor’s office replaced just before the Democrat took over in 2007.
A spokeswoman for Romney, now the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, says the sale of hard drives to aides was legal. She accused Patrick of “doing the Obama campaign’s dirty work.”
Democratic Secretary of State William Galvin, who oversees state public-records laws, says e-mails are like paper records and should be turned over to the state archivist.
