Robert J. Haiman retired as president emeritus of the Poynter
Institute in June 1996 and was named distinguished editor in residence and
senior trustee. He joined the institute as president in 1983 after 25 years at
the St. Petersburg Times as a
reporter, copy editor, night city editor, national editor, managing editor, and
executive editor. He is a director of the Times Publishing Co.; member of the
board of trustees of the Poynter Institute; a member of the American Society of
Newspaper Editors, International Press Institute, and Associated Press Managing
Editors. He is the author of “Best Practices for Newspaper Journalists,” a
handbook for reporters, editors, photographers and other newspaper
professionals on how to be fair to the public.
