N.Y. court rejects imams’ libel claim

The Volokh Conspiracy blog reports on a New York trial court ruling that a New York Post op-ed article did not defame Melody Rashada and three other imams.

The article by Patrick Dunleavy suggested a connection between the prison chaplains and four Muslim terrorism suspects, asking how they “were radicalized to the point where they’d even consider plotting to bomb synagogues in The Bronx and shoot down aircraft with missiles.”

The court found that the article constituted opinion and speculation, not factual declaration, in rejecting Rashada’s argument that the op-ed was defamatory.
