N.J. appeals court revives filmmaker’s lawsuit against police
TRENTON, N.J. — A New Jersey appeals court has reinstated a lawsuit against the Trenton police by a documentary filmmaker who claims officers harassed him and confiscated his camera.
Kelly Ramos sued in 2008. He describes how in 2006 he was shooting film for a documentary about the emergence of gangs in Trenton when he had several run-ins with police.
In one clash, he said, he complied with a request to move across the street to film an incident in which police dispersed a crowd of reputed gang members at a barbecue
Ramos claims one of the officers then threatened him if he didn’t stop filming.
The same officer allegedly confiscated Ramos’ camera four days later and again threatened him.
The Sept. 21 appellate ruling reversed an earlier judge who had dismissed the lawsuit.
