Miss. judge reprimanded for ordering church attendance

A Mississippi judge who ordered defendants to attend church as a condition of bail has been  reprimanded by the Mississippi Supreme Court, law blogger Eugene Volokh reports.

The state high court also criticized Mississippi Justice Court Judge Theresa Brown Dearman for other acts of misconduct, including “presiding at her nephew’s initial appearance.” Dearman was suspended for 30 days.

“Ordering a person to attend church, on pain of being sent to jail if he doesn’t comply, is pretty clearly unconstitutional,” Volokh said.
