Justices leave school limits on religious messages intact

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to review a ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that a California teacher’s religion-themed classroom banners were unacceptable in public school.

In the case, Johnson v. Poway Unified School District, math teacher Bradley Johnson had festooned his classroom with banners reading “In God We Trust” and “God Shed His Grace on Thee.” The 9th Circuit said the public school was within its rights to disavow the religious sentiments and order the banners taken down.
