What Else Can I Do?
Provide everyone in your school community with opportunities to practice democracy.
  • Encourage a wide range of voices in the governance of the school, including students, parents, and members of the community who may have been reluctant in the past to assume positions of leadership.
  • Draft policies and curricula designed to protect religious liberty rights, encourage freedom of expression and a free student press, and provide students with daily opportunities to exercise their rights with responsibility.
Encourage shared decision making in the life of the school.
  • Develop a decision-making process that engages all stakeholders.
  • Frame discussions in ways that encourage and respect a diversity of viewpoints.
  • Invite all members of the school community to discuss issues with civility and respect.
Give students opportunities to translate civic education into community engagement.
  • Ensure that students learn about civic virtue and moral character throughout the school and across the curriculum.
  • Expand service learning, promote project-based learning, and work to develop meaningful partnerships throughout the larger community.
Participate in a First Amendment Schools workshop or presentation.
