Busy day in Supreme Court First Amendment history
First Amendment Center scholar David L. Hudson Jr. looks back at two Dec. 8 rulings, one in 1941 on the right to criticize the judiciary, the other in 1981 supporting a Christian group’s freedom to meet in university buildings:
- Supreme Court protected criticism of judiciary 70 years ago Decision in Bridges v. California is viewed as a victory for both freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
- 30 years ago today, high court backed student Christian group In Widmar v. Vincent, Justices said public universities can’t discriminate against student groups on the basis of their religious views.
