ATLANTA — A high school student who was suspended over an entry in her
personal journal has filed a lawsuit against school officials.
The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 5 by the family of Rachel Boim. It asks that
the incident be cleared from her disciplinary record.
The journal, which was not part of a class project, included a story about a
student dreaming of shooting her math teacher. Boim, then 14, brought the
journal to an art class at Roswell High School in October 2003 and a teacher
confiscated it.
Administrators decided the journal entry constituted a threat of bodily harm
to school employees and expelled Boim.
The Fulton County school board overturned the expulsion after it received
news media attention. But the board let a 10-day suspension stand because
she initially refused to turn the journal over to her art teacher.
Boim, 16, now attends a private school.
