‘60 Minutes’ interviews indicted NSA whistleblower

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

In “The Espionage Act: Why Tom Drake was indicted,” “60 Minutes” talks to the former National Security Agency employee weeks before his trial is set to start.

Drake, who faces up to 35 years in prison on charges of mishandling classified information, admits serving as a Baltimore Sun reporter’s unnamed source for articles about alleged NSA mismanagement. But Drake says he never divulged classified information.

Asked why he thinks he was charged under the Espionage Act, Drake responds: “To send a chilling message … to other whistleblowers, to others in the government, not to speak up or speak out. Do not tell truth to power. We’ll hammer you.”
